🎅🏼 Why I bought my family salt for Xmas
🧂 Why I drink salt every day
Let’s dive in…👇
Last year, I bought every member of my family a bag of salt for Christmas.
It was part joke, part serious present.
Moments before they received their salt…
For the 12 months prior, they had taking an intrigue into one of my habits…
…having a tablespoon of salt in a glass of water every morning.
My ‘salty water’ sparked curiosity from some…
…and ridicule from others 😅
But it remains one of my favourite habits. Here’s why… 👇
Salt as a mineral though is mission critical for our bodies to function.
Salt helps your body hold the right amount of water.
Salt helps your nerves and muscles work properly.
Salt helps keep your blood pressure at a healthy level.
Salt helps your body take in and use other important nutrients from the food you eat.
But the penny dropped for me when I realised…
Our brains, nervous systems, and muscles all need salt to function properly.
If you don’t have enough these core functions literally cannot work.
And most of us do not have nearly enough salt in our systems…
The average person does not have enough salt because of…
1. Processed foods - typically very low in salt.
2. Intense exercise - you lose salt everytime you sweat.
3. Vegan or low-meat diets - tend to be low in salt.
4. Medications - diuretics, antidepressants, can all impact your salt levels.
5. Drinking too much water - flushes the salt out your system & dehydrates you.
6. Aging - a reduced sense of thirst can lead to less consumption & lower salt.
7. Environmental pollution - in the air, water, chemicals in food all increase our bodies needs for mineral like salt.
How I increase my salt intake…
Every morning I put a tablespoon of Sol Salts in a ice cold glass of water.
It’s the very first thing I do, every single day.
I don’t use regular table salt.
I use a special type of high quality salt.
There’s plenty on the market. I currently use this one.
Consuming liquid does not equal hydration.
And not all liquids hydrate equally.
I’m not here to school you on hydration…
But during sleep, the body loses fluids through sweat and respiration.
So you are always dehydrated when you wake up.
Consuming water with added salt is one of the best & most effective ways to rehydrate the body.
And as a result… near instantly experience increased energy levels, better cognitive function, and an overall feeling of vitality 💪
Salty Water vs Coffee
Coffee is the lifeblood of a lot of Entrepreneurs (myself included).
However, it’s not optimal to drink first thing.
Here’s the ‘science-y’ reason why I opt for the salty water vs a coffee in the morning…
Salt and the adrenal system:
Adrenal glands produce hormones like cortisol and aldosterone, which manage stress, regulate blood pressure, and maintain hydration
Consuming salt in the morning replenishes sodium lost during the night and supports the adrenal system to cope with daily stressors
This can lead to feeling more energised, alert, and ready to conquer the day.
Few (legal) things make you feel more alive in the morning than a glass of salty water!
Caffeine and the adenosine system:
Coffee's caffeine interacts with the body's adenosine system
Adenosine is a neurotransmitter that builds up in the brain throughout the day. It’s what make you feel tired & sleepy.
In the first 90 minutes after waking, natural cortisol levels are high, and the adenosine system is not yet active
Therefore consuming caffeine during this time is pointless - as the caffeine literally can’t work!
When I made this switch, I noticed:
I felt sharper & more ‘switched on’ in the morning
I forgot what it’s like to have headache
My morning brain fog washed away
I could move more & lift heavier
I had better energy levels
I was less stressed
Before I end I must caveat…
If you have hypertension, blood pressure or heart issues… then too much salt can be bad news.
Remember, this is not medical advice, I’m not a doctor.
Just an Entrepreneur sharing his experiences & what has worked him. 👍
Until next time.
You owe it to yourself to be properly salted,
Elliott ✌🏼
