Today I want to talk about cold plunge.
Primarily because it’s become a favourite part of my routine that drastically improves my mood & energy.
But also because I just got a new one set up in my flat…👇
I don’t have an outdoor space, so I’ve had to hook up a chilling machine to keep it cold.
Which is a great improvement…
…as previously I had been commandeering my flat mates bathtub and buying 3 bags of ice everyday 😂.
Cold plunges have become a bit of meme recently…
…but I became borderline addicted to them after how they made me feel.
Let me explain why…👇

The Dopamine Hit
As an Entrepreneur we deal with all kinds of sh*t.
I remember a particularly stressful time, when everyday I woke up in a bad mood, dreading coming to the office.
I didn’t know about cold plunge then…
…so instead started taking a long walking route every morning to clear my head & release some endorphins.
Starting the day with the cold can literally trigger you to be in great mood at a biochemical level thanks to the long dopamine release it causes.
Cocaine increases your dopamine 250% for 15-30 mins.
Cold plunge increases your dopamine 250% for 6 hours.
The Metabolic Kickstart
I started plunging for the mood benefits…
…but quickly noticed my physique quickly looked the best it ever had.
Turns out forcing your body to reheat kickstarts your internal energy systems.
Even better… shivering releases succinate which plays a key role in activating brown fat thermogenesis.
A.K.A. the stubborn belly fat we have starts to melt away.
The Resilience
Deliberate cold exposure is an opportunity to stress our body on purpose.
It trains us to maintain mental clarity & calm while our body is in a state of stress.
That is the definition of resilience, grit, and mental toughness.
Tolerating challenges while keeping our heads “straight”
Entrepreneurship is a life of stress.
The more stress you can deal with, the more success you will have.
The Long-Lasting Energy
One of the challenges of business is managing your energy.
Deliberate cold exposure at the start of the day:
Wakes you the f*ck up
Triggers a massive hit of dopamine
Sends your metabolism soaring
But it also increase your core body temperature.
Which is useful as this helps you feel alert & focuses throughout the day.
The Improved Sleep
I notice huge impact on my sleep scores when I cold plunge.
I fall asleep quicker
I sleep deeper (more REM & deep)
I have higher HRV (better recovery)
This is alone sets me up incredibly well for the next day & helps me build real momentum.
Here’s how I currently fit cold exposure into my routine…👇
4:52am Wake Up
4:57am Get in a HOT shower
5:00am Cold Plunge for 3-5 mins
5:05am Towel dry & do press ups/bodyweight squats to warm up
5:15am Head to the gym
Most people laugh or think I’m mad for getting up so early and getting in the cold.
I don’t blame them. I used to think the same thing.
It’s hard to fathom getting up before 5am everyday if you don’t have a strong enough reason to.
But that’s a lesson for next time…
